Family by Family: program rejuvenated, story retold, website renewed

Family by Family is one of the most successful social ventures in Australia. This ‘network of families helping other families’ needed their story reimagined online.

Family by Family needed to move beyond a great idea and into the successful national network that is now changing life experiences for people across New South Wales and South Australia.

We facilitated a scoping workshop with key people in the Family by Family team, asking as many questions as we could about where differences lay between the program in start-up and prototype modes and how diversity had been discovered in various communities as the program evolved. We asked (and listened very carefully) to what the team had to say about who key stakeholders are now and who they might be in the future along with the various users, with a strong emphasis on the ‘sharing families’ and ‘seeking families’. We investigated how people use the site, discover and share information (across a range of networks), get in touch and what sort of structures and language would be the best fit.

We moved from scoping and concepts into a redevelopment of an easy-to-use (and update) website that was based on these stories and structures. We completely rewrote much of the content to ensure video stories and imagery could tell more of the story in place of columns of text. We did so a way that enabled us to keep some of the key branding and design elements, the web publishing platform, retaining some of what was familiar, but also fitting in with the new TACSI masterbrand (also delivered by Ecocreative). We made sure it worked better on tablets and smartphones, too.

The resulting website is now far better attuned into what Family by Family has achieved and where the people who are vital to its future are taking it. And we’re just as excited as they are about the possibilities.

The process of updating the Family by Family website was made seamless and enjoyable by Ecocreative. Matthew and Jordan took the time to understand our program and how we needed our website to support the work we do. They were friendly, approachable, supportive and professional. The end result was a website that not only reflects our unique character, but is easy to navigate and update.
