Managing natural resources: a regional NRM plan communications suite

Managing natural resources doesn't sound easy. Creating a plan to do so is a lot of work. We helped an organisation responsible for part of the state most linked to the Murray River, building up the brand across a suite of published media.

Extensive editing and project management services were required to ready the four-volume, 470-page South Australian Murray-Darling Basin Natural Resources Management Board's regional plan for public consultation.

The editorial and management process operated in parallel with the graphic design of the project's brand identity and the typesetting of the publication and a range of communications media to assist members of the public to participate in shaping this important strategic document.

The production management task for this work was immense. For some years, this sustainably printed document represented one of the largest single uses of 100% post-consumer recycled Australian paper and card we knew of. In fact, it wasn't until we did a swathe of work for a large renewable energy company that this was eclipsed. Pretty cool, we thought, as proceeds from the sale of this paper stock were transferred by the paper merchants to Landcare projects and landfill site remediation projects across Australia. Who says printing is bad for the environment?

Like much of our work, more time went in behind the scenes than the end result can possibly convey. And we reckon it certainly has helped this natural resource management organisation to make more sense of something that is never going to be easy.
