Steam Ranger in Bloom

The remnant vegetation that has been retained along the SteamRanger Railway line provides a window into the past, a glimpse of the plant communities that would have once extended across the landscape.

When we were presented with information about remnant vegetation along the SteamRanger train line through the southern Adelaide Hills and coastal regions, we jumped at the chance to help tell its story.

A brochure/map combination was created to inform passengers of the importance of the track as an untouched wildlife corridor. Colour-coded segments were included to represent pre-European settlement landscape that once surrounded the track in great expanses, now restricted to a small area surrounding the line.

Photos and information on important native flora and fauna punctuated the map, enabling passengers to spot species from the train window and at rest stops. A concertina-style fold was sympathetic to the potential of low elbow-room in a carriage, and the linear nature of a train journey.

The brochure also served to inform passengers of the best trains to take to see different regions of interest between Mt Barker and Victor Harbor.
