Youth Opportunities: visualising a year of positive outcomes
Although their Personal Leadership Program has graduated more than 9000 youths in the past 15 years, to the folk at Youth Opportunities, people are more than numbers.
Youth Opportunities is a not-for-profit organisation that works with disadvantaged youth across the state, particularly in areas of socio-economic disadvantage. Through their Personal Leadership Program, they support and guide young people to make positive choices for happy and successful futures.
We were engaged to help create a Supporter Summary document (like a snapshot annual report), with the aim of thanking and informing supporters while also encouraging new donors. While the target demographic was weighted towards over 50s, it was also vital to acknowledge the youth-focussed nature of the organisation.
As with any not-for-profit organisation, budget was tight and many people were involved. As such the brochure needed to be economical to produce, visually engaging, and condense a breadth of detailed information into bite-sized, easily digested pieces.
After several client meetings and lots of illustrative experimentation, we finally reached a resolution that had just the right balance of authority and playfulness. From start to finish this brochure evolved from a text-heavy document with simple supporting icon graphics to an image-based document with an iconic central illustration. The result was a brochure that not only worked with the existing Youth Opportunities brand, but also extended it with the evolution of a supporting illustration and graphing style.
